PEST MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS

Pesticides and pest management products are regulated in Canada by the Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act.

The PMRA utilizes a stringent, science based evaluation process to assess any potential risks and to ensure that any risks associated with the product are acceptable.  Inclusive in this process is a 15-year re-evaluation cycle to ensure current scientific standards are met on all registered products.

The PMRA defines pesticides / pest control products as:

"Any product, device, organisms, subtance or thing that is manufactured, represented, sold or used as a means for directly or indirectly controlling, preventing, destroying, mitigating, attracting or repelling any pest.  Control products include the active ingredient used in the manufacture of end-use products and the end-use products themselves.  Includes herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, antimicrobial agents, pool chemicals, microbials, material and wood preservatives, animal and insect repellents, and insect- and rodent-controlling devices."

WATER TREATMENT & PURIFICATION

Point-of-Use (POU) & Point-of-Entry (POE) Water Treatment Systems:

POU and POE plumbed-in and POU non-plumbed water treatment systems are regulated in Canada through the CAN/CSA B483.1 Drinking Water Treatment Systems standard.  CAN/CSA B483.1 was developed to complement the existing NSF/ANSI drinking water treatment system standards and specifically address plumbing, mechanical and electrical requirements for the installation of drinking water treatment systems.  NSF/ANSI standards are required for structural integrity, materials extraction and health related contaminant reduction claims.  In addition, the majority of state regulators in the U.S. require certification of drinking water treatment systems to the NSF/ANSI standards.

Drinking Water System Components & Chemicals:

The majority of provincial and territorial plumbing codes either currently utilize or intend to utilize NSF/ANSI Standards 60 & 61 for the certification of Drinking Water System Components and Drinking Water System Chemicals manufactured, sold or distributed in Canada.  In addition, the majority of governmental agencies that regulate drinking water supplies in the U.S. also require NSF/ANSI Standard 60 & 61 certification.

SPECIALTY CHEMICALS

Specialty chemicals are certified or qualified through a broad range of regulatory certification agencies and industry groups, and are typically dependent upon the specific product type, the end-use, and the market into which entry is required.  Product certification or product qualification typically involves performance testing and quality assurance testing to industry standards (i.e. ASTM, ANSI, NSC, etc.) or relevant industry association requirements for the product category.
